Alphabiotics is an alignment technique done entirely by hand, with no devices. Using firm, precise movements from the base of the skull, it aims to release built-up tension in your spine, neck and shoulders and leave you with a feeling of rest. It is a wellness practice: it is not a medical treatment and does not replace one.
What alphabiotics is
Alphabiotics is a wellness practice focused on aligning the spine. Its main session is called an alphabiotic alignment: you lie face up and the alphabiotist makes firm, short, precise movements from the base of the skull, where the spine meets the head.
The idea behind it is simple: stress, poor posture, long hours at a computer or physical work all build up tension in your back. The alignment aims to release that tension so your body feels lighter and more relaxed.
At Alphabiotismo Playa, when it makes sense, we combine it with deep tissue massage, cupping or a chiropractic adjustment. We always explain what we suggest and what it costs before we start.
Where it comes from
Alphabiotics began in the United States. Virgil B. Chrane started it in the 1920s, and his son, Virgil Chrane Jr., established it as a practice of its own in the early 1970s (1970 according to the academy; 1971 according to Encyclopedia.com). In 1979 the Chrane family founded the academy in Texas that still trains alphabiotists today.
Over the years the technique reached Mexico, where there are now centers in several cities. In Playa del Carmen we have been seeing clients downtown since 2018, on 30 Av. at Calle 1 Sur.
What a session is like
- We talkYou tell us what your day looks like: your work, how you sleep and where you carry tension. No long forms.
- We check your postureWe look at how you stand and use our hands to check the tension in your back.
- Massage, if neededIf your muscles are very tight, we start with a massage to loosen them.
- The alignmentFirm, precise movements from the base of the skull while you lie face up.
- What's nextWe tell you how to take care of yourself over the next few days and whether another session makes sense, with its price. You decide.
Who it is for
Many people look for an alignment when their back, neck or shoulders feel weighed down by their daily routine. In our practice we mostly see:
- People who spend long hours sitting at a computer or laptop.
- People who work on their feet, lift heavy loads or do physical work.
- People who feel stress as tension in their neck and shoulders.
- Active people who want to move more freely.
If you have a recent injury or surgery, osteoporosis, or if you are pregnant, talk to your doctor first. At your first visit we will tell you honestly whether the alignment is right for you.
What it feels like
The alignment is firm and brief. Many people describe feeling lighter and more relaxed afterward; others feel tired for the rest of the day, as they might after exercise. Everyone's experience is different.
We explain each movement before we do it, and you can ask us to stop at any time.
Is alphabiotics safe?
Done by a trained practitioner, after a check and with the contraindications respected, the alignment is a gentle, brief practice. Even so, it is not for everyone: if you have a medical condition, an injury or recent surgery, talk to your doctor first.
It is also important to be honest about this: there are no large clinical studies supporting medical claims about alphabiotics. That is why we present it as a wellness practice and not as a treatment. If you want to dig deeper, read our article on whether alphabiotics is safe.

Frequently asked questions about alphabiotics
What is it called in Spanish?
In Spanish it is called "alphabiotismo" (also spelled "alfabiotismo"), which is where our name comes from. It is the same practice as alphabiotics, its original English name.
How long does an alignment take?
About 10 minutes, including the complimentary consultation: a conversation and a posture check. If you combine it with a deep tissue massage, the visit takes about 60 minutes.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on the person. At the end of your first visit we tell you whether it makes sense to come back and how often, with no commitment.
Does it hurt?
It shouldn't hurt. It is firm, precise work; we explain each movement and you can ask us to stop whenever you want.
